Tak Wah Mak grew up in Hong Kong the son of a successful businessman. He was a good "B" student and went to the University of Wisconsin, then the University of Alberta for his Ph.D. He came to the Ontario Cancer Institute in Toronto in 1972 and has been a Senior Scientist there since 1974. Mak is currently Professor of Immunology at U. of T. and a director of Amgen Research Institute of Toronto. In 1983 Mak discovered the gene for the T-cell receptor, a major key to the workings of the human immune system. Over the last decade, using genetic engineering techniques, he and this team have made great strides in the elucidation of the structure and function of the human immune system.
